History

Spring is here, but we can’t even tell. Coronavirus has managed to keep all of us locked up in our homes. Even a single step outside seems impossible right now. It’s a surreal time. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the simple things in life. Watch flowers bloom or take a tour of your favorite museum or city without ever having to step outside your home. Yes, you heard that right. With the help of new immersive and 3D technology, many organizations are allowing users to virtually tour museums, cities, parks, and beaches without ever having to leave their homes.

Take a virtual tour of these amazing places around the world

Beach Virtual Tour

Who wouldn’t want to be lazying it up on a beach without any worry? Beaches are great places to relax and unwind. But with the current situation, it’s impossible to step out on the beach. Most beaches have closed down, and even those that are open are at being avoided by people. But a few organizations are playing fairy godmother and bringing you the whole beach experience virtually.

You can get a dose of the beach life using Florida’s Beach Finder, Curacao 360 virtual tour, and VirtualBali. You can explore all the different beaches by “walking” and see the sights for yourself without ever having to be there physically. No more getting sand in your clothes or getting sunburned. Watch the sunset, or if you are an early riser, you can catch the sunrise. All of this is possible without ever having to step into the beach.

Museum Virtual Tour

Being confined at home can be a burden. It always starts rosy, but by the 2nd week, it becomes boring. You can get rid of your boredom by peering into the rich history and culture of humans using virtual tours.

Museums are offering virtual tours for those who are interested in digging up the past. The British Museum in London provides a rather interesting virtual tour called ‘The Museum of the World.’ The Louvre, home of the most famous painting in the world ‘Mona Lisa,’ also has a virtual tour where you can walk the halls of the hallowed museum. Google Arts and Culture has access to the collection of nearly 2500 museums and is a great site to learn more about art. Out of which, the most famous ones are the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

European Castles Virtual Tour

Imagine yourself roaming around grand castles and taking in the entire scene. With the help of virtual tours, it’s possible to take in the beauty of the palaces without being there physically. You don’t have to wait in line for tickets or bathrooms, wait for your tour group to catch up with you, or be told off for accidentally roaming into a forbidden part of the palace.

Google Arts and Culture tied up with the Versailles to present a virtual walking tour of the entire palace. Put on your VR set and enjoy an all-access pass to the most opulent and famous castle in the world. There’s also a 3D rendering of the entire palace for those interested in its grand architecture. Google also has ties with the Edinburgh Castle where you can walk around the castle with Google street view and explore the palace garden.

World Heritage Sites Virtual Tour

We’ve all dreamed of traveling and seeing the world. But sometimes, that’s just not possible. Despite that, you can now explore the most amazing sites in the world from the safety and comfort of your home using virtual tours. These World Heritage Sites offer us a peek into our past.

Google Earth has compiled walking tours of the world’s most famous monuments such as the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramids, Angkor Wat, Pompei, Stonehenge, and many more. It offers its users the opportunity to see these magnificent structures that have changed the course of history. Another famous world heritage site, the Machu Picchu has it’s own virtual tour with 360-degree views, videos, and a narrator to help you learn more about the amazing ancient site.

Special mention: Animal Cams

Animal cams have been around for quite some time and deserve a special mention. They are extremely popular among casual internet users. Animal cam is exactly what it sounds like, live stream videos, or sometimes recorded videos of animals in their natural state. You can watch your favorite animals and learn so more about them. They are also pretty cute to watch. Check out San Diego Zoo’s various animal cams such as koala cam, panda cam, giraffe cam, and tiger cam. EarthCam also has a variety of animal cams as well as marine wildlife cams.
