Salina Turda, believe it or not, was a salt mine dating back to almost two millennia. Since 1992, the mine has been transformed into a tourist destination.

History:

Salt was first mined during the antiquity period (the period from 8th century BC to 6th century AD). The salt mine actively produced salt till the 20th century and more precisely till 1932.

The salt brought immense richness to the Habsburg and Hungarian rulers as for many decades salt was valued even more than gold.

The salt mine doubled up as a bomb shelter during the world wars.

Present-day:

In 1992, the salt mine reopened as a tourist attraction. It underwent renovation and opened again in 2010. You can take a tour of the salt mine as well as enjoy its hidden secret, a theme park.

Surda Talina’s two enormous mines are the major attractions. Within these mines, a Ferris wheel, spa treatment facility, an 80-seat amphitheater, mini-golf, and bowling, have been installed against a backdrop of stalactites and salt formations.

Tourists enter Salina Turda through an elevator built into centuries-old vertical shafts that used to earlier transport the mines. During this 120 meters slow ride, the tourist can marvel at the beauty of the mine. The shimmering, marbled texture of the mine walls along-with the lighting creates an illusion of an out worldly space-colony.

At the bottom of the bell-shaped Theresa mine, is a salted lake filled by meteoric water. The little Venice boat tour here is another famous tourist ride.

The tourists are in for a bonus therapy, as the mine is a recognized halotherapy site. It is widely popular that breathing the pure air in these subterranean chambers results in health benefits.

Guess its time to tick off that bucket list item you added at the beginning of this article.
