Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. It is a park serving as the friendship between San Diego and its sister city Yokohama, Japan. It was constructed in 1991. These two cities have been "sister cities” since 1957 and this park was built to showcase the peace, mutual respect, to raise economic partnerships and cultural exchange within both cities. It's a place that combines the traditional Japanese architectural design and the local Southern California theme.
It features water flowing streams, a koi pond and mini waterfalls. A variety of beautiful plants like Japanese maples, bamboo groves, bonsai, camellias, azaleas, and seasonal cherry blossoms. Also, feature authentic stone lanterns that are imported from Japan and stone walkways are key highlights of this garden. In addition, several events are hosted, such as tea ceremonies, ikebana (flower arranging), bonsai shows, lantern festivals, and Tanabata celebrations.
