Mount Vesuvius is situated just north of Naples, and is arguably one of the most recognizable volcanoes in the world due to her dangerously beautiful profile, as well as her notoriety of erupting in 79 AD spewing a vast quantity of toxic ash five miles into the air and blanketing and preserving the history of the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum on the west coast of Italy. Now, Vesuvius sits proudly over the Bay of Naples observing her domain displaying just what nature can do, and reminding us that all things have persistence and power. Climbing to about 1,281 meters (4,203ft), we have taken time to experience the sights and sounds of Vesuvius, to cause more awe than fear. Vesuvius has a hike that continues up its slopes through barren landscapes more reminiscent of an uninhabited planet, to its craters through lava flows (in some areas) and lavender that flourish in volcanic soil.
